So much for the blog love. Let's try this again. Anyway, Facebook is no longer my friend. Since September I haven't played any games and it's been really nice. Some people are addicted to drugs and alcohol. I'm addicted to Facebook games. Not really. But that's a huge monkey off my back. I've been hanging out on Ravelry a lot. And I've been watching a lot of podcasts. And knitting a lot. And today I joined Plurk. Hopefully I can make posting here a regular thing again. Now if I can only figure out how to elongate and make my banner pretty?

Neglecting the Blog

Yeah, that's me. Neglecting the 'ole blog. I blame Facebook. I have spent obscene amounts of time surfing around FB and playing FarmVille and Treasure Isle and FrontierVille and well, you get the idea. Actually, I have spent less and less time interacting with people on FB. Number one reason is I can't stand the whining and vagueness that is posted as status updates. Number two reason is every time I post something trying to be moderately funny and light, I get picked on by my siblings. I hate lol and lmao and lack of good spelling habits. I think you get my drift. So I have decided to go back to the blog. There are WAY fewer readers than FB. But if you are going to take the time to find me and read this, then hopefully you aren't here to bust on me.

There's been lots of knitting and some crocheting, a camping trip, and planning for a fall trip. Pictures to follow.

Happy New Year! I hope to post a bit more this year than I did last year. While I don't make New Years resolutions, I do try to make improvements on myself and the world around me. We shall see. It's only the 4th and the boys only just went back to work and school making room for life to be a little more normal again. Christmas week is always topsy turvy with Pete home and the kids home and the boys' birthdays and this year having Dad here. So the utter quiet is a welcome change. Knitting has been little to none so I hope to remedy that. And I'd like to get to sewing more. I enjoyed making the Patchfolio for Jackie and know two more little girls who might like one.

So Zach took his second driving test today and PASSED!!!! That gets a woot! Zach had the flu over the weekend and now Pete has it. Because Pete had his seasonal flu shot the beginning of October, we are assuming he has H1N1. That would be UGH!!!!!!!!! Is it a matter of time before I get it too? Time will tell. UGH!!!

On The Road Again

Pete and I are heading to Lake George, NY today for a camping weekend. This is our first trip out of our comfort zone-Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He has been out that way for work before. I have never been to upstate New York. So it should be fun. Let's just hope the weather is decent.

Do not pay attention to the look on my face. I was very happy I caught a fish- a bass to be exact. On my first cast. Pete was fumbling with my camera phone so I had to sit holding it a little longer than I would have liked. Hence the not so happy face. I caught another one on the last cast, too. Fun times!

There's been knitting going on but I haven't taken any pictures lately. I had elbow issues and couldn't knit for awhile so it's really nice to be able to get back to it. And things have been a bit busy around here with visitors from out of town and lots of cook-outs.

First of nine squares for a crocheted afghan. I made one of these about 20 years ago as a baby gift. For some reason, it's easier this time around. I like it.

A clutch purse

I found the pattern online-I can't remember where. It's a nice little clutch. I think I would use a snap for a closure though for security reasons. The flap won't hold little things like coins in. I like it. I especially love this fabric purchased at The Franklin Mill Store. The lining is the same color green as the circles and button. Very cute.

Pete and Meghan planting

Pete has planted a vegetable garden this year. It's in what was originally a horseshoe pit beyond the pool fence that the former homeowners had installed and we never used. There are tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and green beans. The zucchini and green beans I started from seeds. So far, it's doing well. The weather hasn't been consistantly warm and there have been frost warnings not far north west of here. But we've been lucky. I'm looking forward to having fresh vegetables to eat.

There has been some knitting.

I've accumulated some more fabric stash and bought a pattern from Craftapple for little patchfolio's and crayon notebooks. Hopefully, I will get working on those later today. And then there's this:

Pete and I bought a pop-up camper in April and took it on it's maiden journey a couple weeks ago. What fun!! We can't wait to go again. Throw in lots of weeding and planting and yard work and it's safe to say I've been VERY busy.

Noro Sock

One Noro Kureyon Sock is done. I have to say I'm not thrilled with this yarn. To me there's nothing worse than knots in sock yarn. While working this heel, what did I come across? Yes, a knot. So I have a double repeat of the green and brown through most of the middle of the sock. Yuck. I chose to buy this colorway because I thought it was predominantly aqua/gray/purple with maybe a little bit of green. It is soooo not the case. I think my fascination with Noro is over. Oh well, at least I gave it a try.

Progress On Acer

I've made quite a bit of progress on my Acer. I'm actually in the middle of the waist shaping in the stockinette portion of the body under the yoke-maybe 6-7 inches down. It's been a fast knit and I'd love to finish it before it gets too warm.

Pete and I spent the afternoon in Boston with Peter yesterday. What fun we had! I really miss my boy. He was an excellent tour guide or maybe I should say navigator getting us on this train then that train. Pete and I wouldn't have had a clue. It was in the 6o's which made for an excellent walk through the common and down Comm Ave. to Newbury St. and the Boston Public Library.

This was given to me by my friend's mom who knows that I knit. This was a very pleasant surprise! I've purchased Acer by Kirsten Kapur and hope to use this for that. The wool reminds me of Bartlett Yarns or Briggs & Little. And I really like the color.

This is one of those projects that was this close (pinches thumb and index finger together) to being done and got shoved in the yarn closet. Ugh! One sleeve was left to knit back in September 2007. Yes, 2007! Out it came Saturday night, I hunted down the correct sleeve color in the mass of Comfort partial-balls in the yarn closet and in a matter of an hour or so-DONE!!!! Again, what was I thinking!!!!! Stats on Ravelry.

This is the CUTEST little sweater. I wish I had someone to model it.

I'm Ready To Come Out Of Hibernation

Man, am I tired of being stuck in the house. I've had some fun in the last week or so and am ready to get out more. I spent the night at my sister, Missy's last Friday and went to dinner in Newport and a movie. What a blast! There's more snow on the way (YUCK) for Pete's birthday tomorrow. He was home sick yesterday and Zach was sick last week. I keep my fingers crossed that the germs don't find a home in me. And the knitting goes on as always. I picked up the Arabesque throw from Berroco the other day. It's a fun, un-boring knit and I love the colors I chose of the Comfort. The (gasp) Red Heart socks are almost done. I'm on the gusset decreases of sock #2.

I'll say it again-it's not awful. It feels good, the colors are nice. I'd buy it again, I think.

I joined a group on Ravelry which I can't remember the name but it has to do with knitting 3 sweaters this year or in 3 months or something. I need to rip back the Basic Chic Hoodie still and get that finished. That can be my first of three.

Seems I've been MIA for a bit. Lots to say yet nothing to say. New England winter is in full swing and the cold and snow and gray make me want to hang out at home and do nothing. The knitting is happening. Nothing major. Socks as always. I finally scored some Vesper sock yarn from Knitterly Things. Haven't done anything with it yet. I'm on the down slide (or should I say upslide since they are toe up) on my Jojoland socks. I also bought some (gasp) Red Heart sock yarn and knit one sock. It's not terrible. And at $4.99 a ball for 200+ yards with a 40% off coupon from Michael's, quite affordable. That's about all at the moment. I have a great new camera and no pictures. Go figure. I'll have to work on that I suppose.

I Finished A Sock

The first Jojoland Melody Toe Up Sock is done. It has lovely pastel colors. The two balls of Melody were acquired at different times from two different sources so I fear the socks will be very different. For example, the second ball which I bought recently doesn't seem to have any blue in it. Doesn't really matter to me though because there wasn't very much I could do with the one ball I had anyway. So my sock may end up very different but at least I'll have a pair.

This yarn reminds me a little of Trekking in the way it feels. It's quite nice. And the color changes are very long and subtle. The pattern I'm using is "Mash-Up Magic Toe-Up Sock Recipe" by Zhenya Lavy. I don't have the link handy but a search on Ravelry will produce the pattern for you. It is awesome as a general guideline for toe-up gusseted socks in many gauges and sizes. I've used it often.

And have I said I love my new camera?

The Bernat name and yarn manufacturing was long gone before I ever started working in Uxbridge. So a trip to Uxbridge to buy Bernat would have been fruitless for you. I've never heard of Bernat Gloucester so I cannot even try to give you the name of anything comparable. Sorry.

Zach's Thorpe is a size medium. The directions for the colorwork version are in size medium. The ties are simply braided using the two colors of Lamb's Pride Bulky.

Adios 2008!

I'd be lying if I said I'll miss 2008. What a year! I'm trying to find some good in it but, frankly, it's rather difficult. I can't remember ever looking forward to a new year quite this much. I lost my grandfather and my mom. I'm still having a hard time dealing with losing Mom. I miss her so much everyday and am reminded of her ALL the time. That's a good thing, I know. And as time goes on, I know it will be easier. But right now it just sucks.

I look forward to bettering myself this year. I say that every year. But last year I accomplished nothing. Literally. So I'm tired of being a lump and am ready to do something.

I hope this year brings good change to our country, health and happiness to those I love, and prosperity, job security, financial peace of mind, and a place to call home without fear of foreclosure to all. Not much to ask, I don't think!

Christmas has come and gone and New Years Eve is on Wednesday. Traditionally the week in between the two is Birthday Week here. Peter turns 21 tomorrow and Zach turns 16 on Wednesday. A couple of milestone boys. But Peter is already back in the city and will celebrate his birthday away from home for the first time. I'm a little sad. Zach is looking forward to getting his permit next week. Again, I'm a little sad. My boys are getting to be all grown up.

On a different note, I got a really nice new camera for Christmas. It's a Canon Powershot 10 megapixel. And it came with a teeny tiny tripod and it takes cool macro shots. Time to take some knitting pics, I suppose.

I'm working on a pair of socks too but the pictures were kind of blurry. The "So Called Scarf" is finished. I need to make a hat or mittens to go with it with the 2 remaining balls of Silk Garden.

The Basic Chic Hoodie is stalled at the moment. I need to rip back the ribbing I started because I don't think it will be long enough. And I need to go to Yarnia and get more of the Ultra Alpaca, also.

I hope she likes it.

'Tis The Season

Well, it seems that life has gotten in the way of this here blog lately. The motivation has returned but not with the same enthusiasm. I'm knitting and frogging and knitting and thinking "What else can I knit?" and knitting. I've come to dislike taking pictures. To me, my pictures are boring. And my Flickr account was almost filled up and I don't want to pay to store pictures there so I had to delete a bunch in order to post pictures to Ravelry. Which was a pain in the butt. And I started another Thorpe but it was huge and I should have known it wouldn't be right because I didn't do gauge swatches and the two yarns I used were slightly different weights and it was just bad. And while I love how Zach's Thorpe came out, I'm having trouble with the top of my next one where you cast on 4 stitches and increase. It just looks like crap and is too tight.

One week ago today, my mom passed away in the company of my dad, myself, my 2 brothers and 2 sisters, dad's sister, Mary, and their close friends, Carol and Mike. She went peacefully and comfortably and ready to meet God. She put up a good fight never complaining and always smiling. That's all I care to say about that for now.

I haven't knit in a week. I am numb. And unmotivated at the moment. It's been a week that feels like a year.

So I Got The Boot Or Rather Lack Of A Boot

My f-ing computer friggin' up and quit on me Monday. I was in the middle of surfing the net like I usually do in the morning and BAM!! Nothing. After an hour on the phone with Dell Support, it was determined I needed a new hard drive which was installed yesterday. No computer for 3 days. I curse myself for being so dependent on this frickin' thing. After the last issue a month ago where I thought I needed to reformat the blasted thing, I had saved my favorites folder with all the knitting blogs and sites I read. Last week, I decided to delete that from my flash drive because "I didn't need it anymore". WRONG!!! I reconstructed my list for the most part and add things as I remember them. But what a pain in the ass. As soon as I hit the publish button, this new list gets saved. I'm not going through this bullshit again. Oh, and I also need to resolve a video driver issue that's been screwing up the works lately too. ARGH!!!

So I've worked on the Basic Chic Hoodie a little bit. I knit a Baby Surprise Jacket. And a Thorpe hat for Zach. Pictures soon. I also bought 5 skeins of Noro Silk Garden from WEBS last week. Marked down to $5.79 each. Almost half off. Couldn't resist.

I'm using Sanguine Gryphon Eidos that I bought at The Loopy Ewe over the summer. The color reminds me of fall so I thought it to be perfect. Each Wednesday in October, Kirsten will reveal a new part of the pattern. Obviously, yesterday the cuff was revealed. So far so good.

Is It Really Fall Yet?

By the weather we experienced this weekend, I'd say no. Rain. Humidity. Steamy. Yuck. Not my favorite. But I started another pair of socks.

It seems it has taken me FOREVER to find the right size needle and pattern to render the patterning I desired for this yarn. These are being knit on size 0 needles using the Magic Loop two at a time toe up. Larger needles knit blobs of color instead of more of a stripey pattern. The color is not quite what I hoped for when I bought it but totally cool for the Halloween season.

I think it's time to knit another sweater. The choice will probably be a Chicknits hoodie instead of the Central Park Hoodie or the that aran cardigan from Interweave. I like the Chicknits patterns and the new basic hoodie is written to include larger sizes (like me). I'm thinking I'll use Cascade 220 unless I can find something else that floats my boat.

Sorry, I can't think of a clever title today. Not that I can think of clever titles any other day either. But I actually tried today. And nothing.

So I finished the toe-up socks made with Berroco Sox last night while watching Dancing With The Stars and Project Runway.

The pattern is just a basic toe-up sock with heel flap and gusset. Nothing fancy. I really enjoyed knitting these, I think, because I liked the colors. And I'm one of those people who gets drawn in by "I wonder what color/patterning will come next?" It just makes me want to knit on and on. The yarn is nice. The feel of the fabric reminded me of the Araucania Ranco socks I made a while ago. Very nice!

I've also finished one of Pete's Fingerless Mitts. He's really anxious to have the pair since it's gotten chilly in the mornings when he heads out to work. The second one is getting there. I'm on the colorwork portion of the hand so he should have them soon. So he can stop giving me the evil eye when I knit on something else.

I still don't have a decent picture of the birthday nano. Working on it. And I've been doing a lot of NPR listening. The state of the economy has me pissed and frustrated. I'm sick of the mainstream media and the slanted reports and information (not that NPR is immune)and I'm trying to get an informed opinion of the situation in our country. It sucks. People are greedy. And we, the little people, are shit out of luck. Or so it seems anyway.

And my lovely girl bought me a sweatshirt from her college to add to my collection (the two I have from her brother's school). So, I was without internet access for a week.

And moved one kid to college. She's doing well. Experiencing the usual culture shock that is dorm living and higher education.

And waited for another kid to move himself to college. Yikes, into an apartment with four other boys. Yikes again! He and his friend and roommate rented a Uhaul and drove their crap into the city. He says he likes it. He says he's broke. He says he may have another job. He says he's doing lots of school work.

And I've knit lots of little bits and bobs. Well, maybe not lots. But some here and there. I don't feel like taking pictures and posting them right now. I'm going to wait until my computer is back to normal. I'm getting a new motherboard tomorrow. The ethernet card is apparently welded to the motherboard so they have to replace it. Joy of joys! Anyway, I knit a multi-directional scarf with Patons SWS. I had 2 balls I had bought to make a felted something or other and never did. I ended up needing to buy a third ball. It's a nice heavy scarf. I'll probably give it to someone. Summer of Socks 08 ended last week? Yeah, last week. After the third bi-weekly period I sort of got disenchanted with the whole thing. There were some words between a participant and a mod in the Ravelry group and it just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm in the middle of a pair or two of socks. Nothing special. Oh, I am also in the middle of a Flower Basket Shawl. I've always had trouble with lace shawl type things. I get messed up where I am in the pattern and if I make a mistake I have difficulty ripping back to it to fix it. I don't know. Anyway, this one has been very successful so far. I'm using Koigu Kersti I had in the stash (like most of my projects lately) and I love it.

I lost my internet connection all last week. Seems, after hours on the phone with Dell and the cable company and a service call to the house this morning, that my ethernet board is toast. Or something like that. Someone is supposed to come next week to replace the motherboard. Meanwhile I'm connected using a USB. Better than nothing I guess.

Move In Day

We moved Meghan into her dorm yesterday morning. I am so excited for her and know she is going to have a blast! Her roommate is very nice and the room isn't terrible. All the tuition bills got paid and as soon as Peter picks up his stuff this weekend, I can relax and get into a somewhat normal routine again. This summer has been a whorl wind and very busy with a little stress thrown in. I am so looking forward to fall (my favorite time of year) and cool dry weather. Zach started school the 21st and now I can concentrate on him for a bit. He has two honors classes this year which might prove to be a struggle if he gets off track. So that is my mission now.

Oh yeah, and did I say, life is good!!!

My Loopified Diamondy socks are finished. Wow! I absolutely LOVE these socks. They are soo soft. I love the colors and the pattern. Totally awesome!

The leg pattern detail- it's simple but adds enough detail to make knitting interesting. The stripes kind of hide it but I love it nonetheless.

Marianas is officially finished. I did not like the deep open placket at the neck. It curled and was too low. So with some left over grosgrain ribbon from the Ribby Cardi, I sewed the opening down part way (indicated with the arrow). It looks and feels much better. But something is missing. I may sew some buttons over the placket to make it look like a faux opening. Or not. Haven't decided for sure yet. This will be a nice cozy sweater this fall and winter. I've always been a sweater girl and love the fact that I can knit my own. Next up-either a Central Park Hoodie or the Tweedy Aran Cardigan.

Every time I buy yarn online, I tell myself that's it, no more. I can't afford to be doing this. And then The Loopy Ewe has an anniversary sock kit which I have to have. Bad Mer! I didn't take pictures of the nice blue mug or pin or pattern or tattoos (I'll do that another time). But I did wind this AWESOME yarn-Hand Maiden Casbah-which is 80/10/10 merino, CASHMERE, nylon. It is so soft. And sturdy. And stripes beautifully. Instead of the kit pattern, I chose Diamondy by Stariel. So far I'm loving it!

We're on the downslide to fall. This is a BIG transition month and I'm getting a bit kerflutzed. Peter will be leaving Saturday or Sunday for his Orientation camp/training stuff. Then he returns to pack up a Uhaul with his belongings and move to the big city. I'll never see him again! No, not literally. He'll have no reason to come here. Except for holidays.....if I'm lucky. Meghan leaves the 28th. Don't get me started on that one. Zach starts his sophomore year of high school the 21st. Where has the time gone!

Once everyone gets to where they are going, I'll have way TOO much time on my hands. I need to find something to do. I need to find a job. Past attempts have been unsuccessful. I am an awesome employee but how do you convince potential employers of that without actually showing them how awesome you are. References? Yeah, right. Burned that bridge. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!! I will find something. If I can just keep the big man off my back. He thinks he knows everything and can tell me what to do. Don't think so!

All the work we put in last week getting the yard and the house ready for Meg's Graduation party was so worth it. It was hot and sunny in the low 90's and we couldn't have asked for a better day. Good company, good kids and loads of fun!!

As far as sock knitting goes, I started Belle Epoque from Melissa Morgan-Oakes' book, 2 at a Time Socks. This is a great pattern. I'm not terribly thrilled with the color of the yarn but it's growing on me.

More randomness.....

-It's all very summer-like here. All of the kids are done with school. Two are working, one is not (he's only 15 so he has time). They sleep until 9 or 10am. But they are a pleasure to have around and good company. I think I am enjoying this summer more than any other summers with kids so far.

-Mom and Dad are flying the friendly skies as we speak back to their home in Florida. It was unfortunate that Gramp's death got them up here but oh so nice to see them and spend lots of time with them. Poor Mom is exhausted and I'm sure will sleep for a month on their return to life. She has COPD and her breathing has been suckier than usual the last 6 months or so. It hurts me to see her struggle so much but she is a trooper and just plugs along as best she can. It takes a toll on Dad too because has to do everything. But he does it with a smile for the most part. I miss them already.

-Meghan had Orientation at UMD at the end of last week. She had fun and was tired when she got home. She met some other math majors which was good. And yesterday she was notified that she is receiving a $3000 scholarship from that Foundation in Worcester that we had to drive in for an interview a few weeks ago. Pete and I are thrilled beyond belief for her. Her student loan load will be fairly minimal (as compared to her brother anyway). It made me happy to see her further rewarded for her hard work in high school.

-I'm trying to do more sewing. Sewing isn't like knitting where you can just pick up your project and sit anywhere anytime and knit. That's what I'm finding difficult about sewing. It's in a fixed place. And there's a lot of prep work before you actually get down to the sewing. I was hoping to be able to move all my craft stuff upstairs to Zach's room in the fall since he moved into Peter's room in the basement. But Pete and I are thinking the basement won't be a good place for Zach come September and school. I don't know, we'll see.

June has just been, well to be blunt, an f...in' bummer. Thank goodness we had Meghan's graduation to bolster the spirits because otherwise I'd want to wipe the whole month off the face of this earth.

In exactly 3 weeks, my 91 year old grandfather was moved from the assisted living facility (can you say private money-suck?)he lived in for something like 10+ years to a more affordable nursing home where he fell twice, contracted a urinary tract infection then passed away. Three weeks. 19 days. Gone. Done. Medicare/medicaid whatever it is hadn't even kicked in yet. Bam. Done. The wake was Monday and the funeral yesterday. He didn't look like Gramp. And I really didn't feel anything. Until the middle of the church service. Weird. I had a lot of angst. And guilt. And it just disappeared. Suddenly. And a huge wave of emotion swept over me. And I felt relieved. Like I didn't need to feel guilty or bad anymore. He was ok. In a good place. With Gram.

Life goes on......

I Got A Package

As soon as I hit the post button on my last entry, I went "shopping" at The Loopy Ewe. I have my very own Little Loopy who is, by the way, very cute and very soft. Since I'm a gadget ho, I bought a very neat Stitch Saver. It's a mini crochet hook on a ring. Ingenious. When I clicked on The Sanguine Gryphon Eidos Agathon, I just had to have it. The color is so not what I usually go for but for some reason it screamed "Buy Me". So I did. It's a rich orangy gold and I like it! And I've been wanting to try the new Berroco sock yarns. They came out with all their new sock yarns shortly after I quit the place of my former employment so I didn't get to see them in person. The Sox is nice. It's soft and I like the colors.

I wanted to post tomorrow for the beginning of Summer of Socks. But my grandfather passed away yesterday and I have family coming in from out of town and just plain family stuff to do. I might try to write an entry and post date it. I'm supposed to be able to do that now. Otherwise, I'll just have to document my SOS start sometime next week.

A Random Day

I started out with a bunch of random crap which didn't mean anything to anyone but me. So I deleted it. I've said previously that I tend to dwell on the negative. And that's what I was doing with my randomness. Not good.

Knitting....hum.....I've been more scatter-brained than usual. The February Lady Sweater has been scrapped. I won't have enough yarn. Which makes me sad because it was looking really good. All the stripes from the Kureyon were cool. Oh well! I really need to take the time to do the math and gauge figuring. Probably the only thing in my life I do with any reckless abandon is cast on without doing the figuring. And that's wrong. Very wrong. I waste so much time. Another thing to work on changing.

Summer of Socks starts on Saturday. I can't decide what I want to cast on for first. So many choices, lots of yarn and an itch to buy more sock yarn. This is really dangerous. I'm still unemployed, I have two college bills coming any day now, gas is $4.00 a gallon. Wait. I have a credit at The Loopy Ewe. OH BOY! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

I'll say it again-Ravelry is so cool and utterly addictive. Not good for my addictive personality. Though I've been good and haven't spent long hours on it lately. But man, what a tool it is. And a window into the knitting world beyond my own little head. When I was at my former place of employment, I felt like I was living in a bubble. Not entirely the fault of the employer. It just seemed like such a small environment. I didn't allow myself to look outward from there. But the knitting world has taken on such a life of its own. I am so glad to be a part of it and need, I think, to be more immersed in it. Once again, it's a matter of putting myself out there. Working on it.

Some Knitting

I'm jonesing to knit some socks. After I finished the "Go With The Flow" pair a few weeks back I decided not to cast on for any new ones until the 21st when Summer of Socks starts. So instead, I started the February Lady Sweater (go to Ravelry and search-it's everywhere)out of my stash Kureyon. I used a larger needle than the pattern called for, cast on 95 stitches to start, and just knit according to the pattern until it looked right tried on over my shoulders. I had to make a few adjustments math-wise but so far so good. If it works out ok and I have enough yarn, then great. If I run out of yarn, then oh well. It's keeping me occupied until Saturday when sock knitting starts again.

This is my Lace Ribbon Scarf using Knit Picks Palette (Yeah, I ripped the La Dentelle Belle). I've stated before that I have a hard time with lace. I get lost and forget yarnovers and have trouble ripping back and keeping track of the stitches and so on. This scarf though is very uncomplicated and easy to memorize. I really like this one.

Politics and the Media Will Never Be The Same

Tim Russert died suddenly yesterday. That news made me sad. I didn't know Mr. Russert personally. But nonetheless, the news of his death hit me. Why? I think it was because he, of all the TV news reporters and anchors and analysts and experts was, to me, the only one who was on point, stuck to his subject at hand, was objective and oh so knowledgeable about the politics that define our country. It was a pleasure watching and listening to him. He was no nonsense without agendas or spins. And from the reports on NBC and other networks, he was a devoted family man to his wife and son and father. RIP Mr. Russert.

A tropical heatwave! 90 plus degrees until Tuesday. The pool is open but needs some IronAway before we can swim. Hopefully, it will be clear and swimmable this evening!

The graduation was Friday night-outside. I was so happy. As soon as I download the pictures, I'll make a post about it. It was a crazy week last week but ended on a huge high with Meghan getting her diploma.

It's Almost Done

This week is almost done, thank goodness! I thought today would be an easy day to do the housecleaning and make stuff for dinner tomorrow. But no! Got a phone call yesterday from a foundation in Worcester with whom Meghan applied for a scholarship. They had been trying to reach her for a week or so but we haven't checked the answering machine. Anyway, she had an appointment for an interview at 8:45 this morning. By the time she and I got up there was no hot water because my boys insist on spending way too much time using all the hot water. Then I had to drive to and around Worcester which is fine except it was to a section of the city that I haven't driven to before. Any way, it all turned out fine, it was very easy to find and easy to get home. They asked some general questions and she was done. Now we wait and see.

Tomorrow night is the big night! She's excited and we are excited and proud. I'll say it again, I can't believe she's done with high school. She is very much looking forward to college and a change of scenery. Way to go, Meg!!

Busy Week

My girl is graduating from High School on Friday. I don't know where the last 12 years have gone! We have Class Night tomorrow night. The rest of the week I must clean my house. The in-laws are coming for the graduation ceremony and likely staying overnight. And Peter is insistent on his girlfriend staying over Friday night too. Ugh. Throw in a meeting at my grandfather's new nursing home and I'm thoroughly maxed out for the week.

I didn't knit at all over the weekend. I weeded in the backyard. At night I was exhausted. It's very unusual for me not to knit at all. I'm doing the Lace Ribbon Scarf at the moment. No pictures yet. But I did knit for awhile last night.

Hexagons

It was all about hexagons this weekend. Hexagons while watching mindless TV and Saturday Night Live while waiting for Meghan to get home from babysitting Saturday night. Hexagons during the Desperate Housewives finale, the news and Catch and Release on HBO. I don't know why but I really love that movie. Not Jennifer Garner so much but everything else. You'd think with all that "sitting on my butt in front of the tube" time I'd have more done. Well, no. But I'm not bored yet and that's a good thing.

I'm feeling a bit, I don't know, cynical, today. I hate hate hate the media these days. EVERYTHING gets so overdone and over reported. Myanmar. Then China. Now Ted Kennedy? I'm not saying that those natural disasters don't deserve media coverage. People need help. The media appeals to public sympathy. Ok, I get it. But Ted Kennedy gets taken to the hospital and Massachusetts stands still. No more China or Myanmar. The media outlets are on death watch outside Mass General waiting for a glimpse or a sound bite or a press conference or stupid video of his family and friends arriving or departing. Man, give me a break! Channel 5 even interviewed Tom Brady about it at a Kennedy/Shriver charity event on the Cape. Like Tom Brady is an expert on anything. Oh and let's make this an opportunity for the presidential candidates to weigh in too. Hilary Clinton cracked me up with her great respect for Kennedy and his work in health care in this country. Way to go making a plug for your own platforms, Hilary!

This Should Keep Me Busy For Awhile

Arabesque (free Berroco pattern) using worsted weight Comfort on #7 circular needles

I don't want to start any new socks before Summer of Socks starts June 21st and haven't found anything else to knit that floats my boat at the moment. I've already memorized the Arabesque pattern so it's sort of mindless while watching TV at night. As I've said before, I have a couple bags of leftover balls of Comfort (which by the way is really nice yarn for being acrylic/nylon) and this throw is working out perfectly for that.

Twice in One Month

I had to take Peter to the train in Franklin yesterday. He's commuting to work in Boston this summer. I needed some thread to sew ribbon over the zipper I put in my Ribby Cardi. Where better to get thread than Franklin Mill Store. But I couldn't just buy thread. They have a bunch of pre-packaged fat quarters and yardage. This one jumped out at me. And I remembered that I had fallen short on yardage for the clutch so I picked up another skein of Lamb's Pride Bulky. It's not the same dye lot but at this point, I really can't be choosy. I can't see any difference.

I bought the Comfort to finish two projects I had started with the mondo bags of Comfort leftovers I got at my former place of employment-the pinwheel sweater and the Arabesque Throw. I knit another hexagon for the throw last night. I've been knitting them circularly eliminating the need to sew seams. And I also picked up stitches along the previous hexagon to eliminate sewing the hexagons together. The only thing I'll have to do is weave in ends. So far, so good.

One Skein? Really?

Here is my Oneskein clutch. See the blue? Not so much one skein! Unless I used some of the skein previously (I don't remember), there wasn't enough to finish the bag. Yeah, I'm bummed. I really like the brown and the blue makes it look, I don't know, cheap? I'm going to leave it and hope that when it's felted the colors will blend nicely and be a bit more muted. Ugh!

I'm knitting a Trellis now also. I have until sometime this summer to get it done. The yarn is a cone I acquired at my former place of employment. No idea what it is exactly. I should do a burn test. I did knit a swatch and ran it throught the washer and while I don't think it felted really it did shrink a bit. Maybe it's a blend. I don't know. Anyway, it's soft, the color is deep and pretty and the stitch definition is excellent.
Yes, I am knitting it in one piece with an extra stitch on each side as a seam stitch. I'm not fond of putting pieces together and figured "what the heck?".

I bought two hanks of Happy Feet from the Franklin Mill Store a couple weeks ago. The picture isn't very good. It's actually a lot nicer in person-orange and purple and pink.

"The Clutch You'll Never Give Up" from Oneskein by Leigh Radford is made using Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride in Sable.
I've come to the conclusion that I'll never find a pattern for a sweater or whatever for myself with only 10 skeins of this Noro Kureyon. Now I have 10 skeins to make a bunch of felted objects. The first is this accessory bag from Weekend Knitting. Instead of using scraps of wool on hand, I just used the Kureyon. The stripes and colors are pretty in my opinion. I made some changes to the pattern and will post them when the bag is complete.

My "Go With The Flow" socks are coming along nicely. The colors pooled a little more on the second sock but I think the lace pattern sort of breaks it up so it's not horrible.

Another Monday Morning

We had a pretty busy weekend. Friday was move out of the dorms day so off to Boston we went to pick-up city boy's stuff. He stayed because he had stuff to do over the weekend. Saturday, Meghan had placement tests at UMD so off we went. It was a gray, yucky day so we weren't able to sit by the ocean and wait for her to call when she was done. Instead, we sat in the parking lot where I knit and Pete read. Yesterday was grocery shopping day and prom dress day. Want to drop a wad of cash-go grocery shopping and buy a prom dress in the same day. Slightly depressing! Anyway, that was the weekend.

I did finish CeCe on Friday. I'm considering frogging it. The Reynolds Saucy yarn is heavy (duh, it's 100% cotton) and while the body fits well, the sleeves are huge, even for me. We'll see.

Oh and I joined Summer of Socks 2008. It doesn't start until June 21st. So I'll finish the two pair of socks I have started and then just make my plan for the summer until 6/21. Between Sockapalooza 5 and SoS, I should have plenty on my plate.

I Feel Like I Want To Rant But Won't

First, this little something is for one of Meghan's teachers whose wife is due to give birth. Details are on Ravelry (MeredithO). I'm really happy with this sweater. I used Rowan Wool Cotton which I bought on sale from Knit Happens when they had their online store. There was enough left over for a pair of booties too. I'll post a picture of both sweater and booties after I buy buttons at the Franklin Mill Store on Thursday, sew up the booties and block everything. Cute cute cute!

What do I want to rant about? Money or lack there of, friggin' Miley Cyrus (enough is enough), gas, oil, President Bush, will my kids be able to get student loans this summer. There's more but I just don't want to go there. Sorry. I'll try to stick to my knitting. That always makes me feel good.
